Perspectives on Creative Industries

The 2005 conference opened with an international keynote panel which provided three different perspectives on creative industries.

Dame Cheryll Sotheran

Dame Cheryll SotheranCheryll Sotheran is currently Sector Director, Creative Industries, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Cheryll is responsible for the strategic development of the creative industries in New Zealand’s economic development agency and for strategic leadership of creativity and innovation across all sectors in the New Zealand economy. This involves leadership in strategic development, sector and business development, and development of export and international networks and markets.

Cheryll has been instrumental in developing creative industries in New Zealand and set the context for the conference by talking about Transforming the Economy through Creative Enterprise.

Paul Voigt

Paul VoigtPaul is a Senior Investment Manager, Creative Industries, for Investment New Zealand the investment arm of New Zealand Trade & Enterprise. Paul sits on the board of Film NZ which liases with major studios, producers and directors to attract them to film in New Zealand and increasingly also do post-production and special effects in New Zealand. He has had intensive involvement in the Lord of the Rings project.

Paul talked about how New Zealand used The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a major leveraging exercise to reposition the country and its creative industries.

Paul Brewer

Paul BrewerPaul Brewer began as Director of Marketing and Communications at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in 1998. In this role, Paul is responsible for strategic marketing and promotions of Te Papa's products from exhibitions, events, and commercial businesses, to the international tourism wholesaler markets. Paul is also responsible for visitor and market research, as well as all media liaison and public relations programs and strategies.

Paul has previously worked in the New Zealand House of Representatives as Senior Private Secretary to several cabinet ministers, before moving into corporate communications where he has held positions including Communications Manager for the New Zealand Insurance Council and Corporate Communications Director for Tower Financial Services. He also established his own communications consultancy, Paul Brewer and Associates.

Paul Brewer has an MA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Auckland and a Public Relations Certificate from Massey University. In 1995, he was awarded the LVO (Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order) by Her Majesty the Queen.

Paul talked about how to create new stories for new audiences.
