October - occupied with modernism Modernism in Australia crosses over all the domains of culture from architecture through design to art. Max Dupain’s photographic compositions show us Harry Seidler’s vision of endless possibilities of living in a world which could combine the built and the natural environment. Yet the challenge has been thrown that this awareness of functionality and form, and its soaring possibilities, has also to meet the serious concerns of modern life on this planet. This critique is implicit in Australia’s pavilion of vernacular architecture at the Venice Biennale and at the Queensland architectural exhibition: Place Makers. Australia’s new media art bodies, like ACID and ANAT, are linking arts, science and technology in creative solutions. Projects range from diverse partnerships which allow us to ‘listen’ to the DNA structure inherent in diabetes to developing aesthetic solutions for robotic structures which assist the seriously ill. FORM in Western Australia advocates Indigenous and vernacular design as essential for creative, sustainable and connected communities.
