Furniture design, manufacture and creative studio practice is increasingly driven by reassessment and revaluation of materials and processes. There is discernable shift towards a greater valuing of the worth (capital) instilled within finite resources and the need to find new ways of working with them. This exhibition showcases the diversity of design approaches to materials once considered non-precious. Shoe Show examines contemporary shoe making in Melbourne, showcasing new and experimental work by some of Melbourne's leading emerging shoemakers. It features a diverse selection of shoes and provides insight into the art and technique of local bespoke shoemakers who use the form of the shoe as a vehicle for artistic expression and technical innovation. Craft Victoria presents the work of graduating craft and design students, selected by invited professionals in over 35 departments across Victorian Tertiary and TAFE institutions. Fields include ceramics, glass, jewellery, gold and silver-smithing, fashion, textiles, industrial, product and furniture design. Prizes include the Third Drawer Down Product Development Award, the Screaming Pixel Professional Photography Portfolio Award, Artichoke subscription award and the Sofitel Melbourne / Global Art Projects Exhibition in a Public Space Award. The 14th Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia Biennial Conference brings together practitioners, educators, collectors and critics to discuss the theme Re-source. The three main themes of the conference will be Unearthing the Past, Materials Exploration and Prospecting Future Directions to further enhance and encourage a vibrant creative industry in jewellery and object making in Australia and beyond.

This free exhibition will showcase the work of eight independent contemporary designers from Australia and New Zealand—Akira Isogawa, Toni Maticevski, MaterialByProduct, Romance Was Born, Doris de Pont, World, Nom*D and Zambesi. The exhibition will include over 40 works from the NGV Collection, spanning the last 10 years. Ian Potter Centre.

Since the inception of this two week residential design studio program, participants from 46 nations have attended. Participants are primarily, now, practising architects - older and younger - with some professors, academics, recent graduates and a few senior students. The program includes extensive site investigations, intensive studio tutoring, progress design critiques and after. Glenn Murcutt is known for his 'singular practice' acclaimed through the award of the 2002 Pritzker Prize.

The Australian Design Unit is an on-line newsroom and tool kit for design businesses. Tools at hand include sample distribution agreements, licensing agreements, manufacturing agreements and many other handy resources to explore. The creative entrepreneur section is updated monthly from a wide range of local and international sources. This open-access, peer reviewed, online annual journal from Craft Australia focuses on research in the craft and design sector. Volume 3, 2011 will be on The Carbon Issue - sustainability in craft and design and is calling for papers. Volume 1, 2009 on Migratory Practices is online now. Volume 2, 2010 will be on Cultural Exchanges in Craft and Design.

The International Federation of Landscape Architects Design Excellence award was given to the Australian Garden, part of the Royal Botanic Garden in Cranbourne. A project by Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL) and Paul Thompson, this curated garden has several zones, from 'abstracted woodlands' to highly designed gardens, divided by a waterway. A sculptural wall (designer: Greg Clarke) runs alongside. The 'red centre' is the Sand Garden.

The winners of this award for excellence and innovation in urban design have been announced. The Australia Award for Urban Design highlights the best of design in the built environment and acknowledges the critical role of good urban design in the development of our towns and cities.
